Eastern Bavaria
In the east of Bavaria, you can find innumerable beauties of nature, limestone and stalactite caverns, silent river valleys and colorful mixed forests, plateaus of lakes, magnificent views and Europe's most popular spas. In the national park Bayerischer Wald, you can walk over the Seelensteig, a wooden footbridge from where you can gain views into untouched nature. The first German national park has emerged here. Origin, growth and vanishing of the forest can be observed.
Fans of nature are advised to make another excursion to Oberpfälzer Wald which enchants by its natural and fabulous scenery.
Art and culture are as rich as the scenery. Magnificent monuments give their imprint to Eastern Bavaria: medieval towns and citadels, the cathedral of Regensburg or Landshut's highest brick tower in the world. But other sites have become famous, too: the cathedral of Passau with the biggest organ in the world or the basilica of Waldsassen. The center of Eastern Bavaria is crossed by the second largest river of Europe, the Danube. Formerly, it was the borderline of the Roman Empire. That's why you can find many historic curiosities especially there.
Another special attraction is the Glasstraße which combines numerous glassworks along the Bavarian-Bohemian border. Here you can still feel the pulsation of Europe's "heart of glass".
You can also hike on "goldenen Steigen" in Eastern Bavaria. Although it wasn't always gold to be transported on this medieval path, these trade routes brought nevertheless affluence to the borderland between Danube and Vltava - thanks to the so-called "white gold", the salt obtained in the south.
You can enjoy high quality in cure and wellness camping in the Lower Bavarian Spa Triangle with its Europe-wide known health resorts Bad Füssing, Bad Birnbach und Bad Griesbach. Multifaceted wellness facilities without comparison in whole Europe.
